I had no idea what the story was about. I was on FB and clicked on the 'trending' information on the right because, as an author, I notice things like how many reviews books get and this one had over 12,000. I thought (before I watched the clips) wow, it must be good!
After clicking on the top trailer offered on the site the click took me to, I read that the clip (which was still loading) was about a metaphor concerning a cigarette. Coming from a background of smokers (I have never been one because of this) I wondered why this was significant.
The main male character puts a cancer stick in his mouth and the girl, who is outraged, tells him he's an idiot (HOORAY - I thought!) Then he justifies doing this by saying something so inherently stupid, it reminded me of author Erich Segal's infamous "Love means never having to say you're sorry" hogwash from the blighted 1970's.
The metaphor? Put what kills you between your teeth, but don't give it the power to kill you (by not lighting it).
REALLY? Well, that was Strike One for me - a complete turn off. I was a victim of second-hand smoke, and watching my loved one die of cancer because cigarettes were never banned - well, it was beyond insulting. People might ask, what's the big deal?
Well, try this: Picture a teenager saying, "Put a loaded gun between my teeth and just don't pull the trigger" and that should give you the idea how I feel about how stupid that scene is.
Intellectually, I understand that this is a way for the character to 'blow smoke' at what is killing him...but, please, Hollywood, think of something less damaging and stop promoting smokes!

But she told him off! people will complain.
Yes, she did, but he STILL put the cancer stick in his mouth, didn't he?
I'd like it better if she ripped it out of his mouth, stomped on it, and walked away.
Second strike: the movie is sad. It can't end well. After reading a few of the comments, someone does. One of the main characters is going to die and it isn't Voldemort. No thanks. I'd rather be ten kinds of happy when I leave a theater.

Final (and biggest) strike: I couldn't even finish watching the second trailer because it turned into a hormone-massaging session. The main male character pulls off the girls shirt...and that closed the movie/book for me.
So, this movie is gets three strikes. I have better things to do - like watch my grass grow.
